It's criminal

The father of the 2-year-old toddler shaken, bashed and stomped on by Michael Curran pleaded with Justice Graham Lang for one of the "harshest deterrent sentences" in the High Court at Rotorua yesterday.

"No one can imagine the suffering I went through whilst having to deal with the death of the apple of my eye and not being able to find comfort with my children, who were removed from our care by CYF because they decided we weren't suitable parents for allowing Aaliyah to be placed in an unsafe environment with a murderer," Brad Morrissey told Justice Lang in his victim impact statement read out in court.

Justice Lang sentenced Curran to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 20 years and six months, receiving one of the longest non-parole periods in the country's history. He will not be out of jail until 2028 at the earliest.

Does any level of punishment really deter a rabid animal like this? What else can society do with rabid animals?
